Job Description

We are seeking an Audio Engineer to work across The Verge's podcast slate, including on our two flagship shows: The Vergecast and Decoder with Nilay Patel. You should have an interest in the technology space with experience editing audio programming with extra credit for experience in podcast video editing. This is an opportunity to help shape the future of The Verge's podcast program.

WHO WE ARE

The Verge is an ambitious multimedia effort founded in 2011 to examine how technology will change life in the future for a massive mainstream audience.

The Verge is part of Vox Media, the leading modern media company. We guide our audience from discovery to obsession. We inspire essential conversations about what's now, what's next, and what's possible.

As a community of journalists and storytellers, business professionals, creators and technologists, we believe it is a moral and business imperative to amplify voices: to cultivate diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout our organization and media. This applies to our candidates, our teams, our storytelling, our creative work, and our platforms, products, and partnerships.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Working with our lead producers, you will be responsible for all aspects of audio production and post production on our shows, helping our sound and style to continually evolve. The audio team is small and collaborative. We are nimble on projects and flexible with our time while maintaining the high quality programming that people expect from The Verge. The current shows have established formats, but they are also ripe for experimentation. Other responsibilities will include:

  • Podcast production services on all Verge content — including recording, editing, mixing, and mastering.
  • Develop and evolve sound design for current productions and potential new projects
  • Post-production audio repairing
  • Work with producers on editorial decisions in edit phase of productions
  • Social video and promotional marketing assets
  • Assist with publishing process of weekly shows, including advertising placements
  • Collaborate with producers on guest and topic ideas

WHO YOU ARE

We're looking for creative candidates with a keen attention to detail, a love for podcasts, and a deep interest in The Verge's coverage areas.

If you think you have what it takes, but don't meet every single point in our job posting, please apply with a cover letter to let us know how you believe you can bring your unique skills to the Vox Media team or get in touch! We've hired chefs who became editors, DJs who became UX designers, and sommeliers who became writers.

  • A great ear for loudness, equalization, compression, and overall mixing practices
  • Proficiency in working in a Digital Audio Workstation like Audition, Pro Tools, Logic, or similar
  • Experience with audio repair software like iZotope RX
  • Interest and ability to learn new audio and video tools and techniques in the trade
  • Ability to jump into different shows and maintain a consistent level of audio quality and loudness standards to productions
  • Knowledge and interest in the tech and science world

If you think you have what it takes, but don't meet every single point in our job posting, please apply with a cover letter to let us know how you believe you can bring your unique skills to the Vox Media team or get in touch!
