Organizational Overview

State Democracy Defenders Action (SDDA) is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization dedicated to defeating election sabotage and denial, fighting autocracy, and building a resilient democracy. SDDA also provides general administration for a group of related independent entities including State Democracy Defenders Fund (c3),Democracy Defenders PAC, and Democracy Defenders Projects – the home for the new media entity, The Contrarian. We were founded to counter the authoritarian threat to our democracy. State Democracy Defenders Action was founded in 2023 by Ambassador Norm Eisen (ret.), alongside other leading figures in democracy defense, elections, and law. SDDA launched the Contrarian which is being led by Eisen and new Editor-in Chief, Jen Rubin.

Position Summary  

State Democracy Defenders Action (SDDA) is looking for rising juniors, seniors and recent college graduates with an interest in political and strategic comms, pro-democracy initiatives, and the fight against autocracy. Our internship provides students a unique opportunity to play a key role in preserving democracy by supporting our communications program. Communications Interns will report to the Communications Director and work closely with the team to track headlines related to the org’s legal efforts, draft social media for SDDA and SDDF’s X and Bluesky accounts, and field press inquiries. 

Interns are expected to adapt to breaking news, connect with other members of the comms team daily, and proactively adapt to a rapidly changing comms landscape.

Interns will be responsible for tasks including but not limited to:

• Helping manage SDDA, SDDF, and Amb. Eisen’s social media presence
• Pulling appropriate press lists and news articles
• Performing administrative duties including scheduling and recordkeeping
• Reviewing press releases
• Assisting with research projects 
• Other tasks as needed

Desired Qualifications:

• Currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from an undergraduate program
• Applicants majoring in communications, journalism or political science will be prioritized
• A dedicated interest in government, comms, or public policy
• Excellent written communication abilities
• Strong time management skills, including the ability to meet rapid deadlines, prioritize tasks appropriately, and juggle multiple assignments at once
• Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in a fast-paced environment
• Sound judgment and discretion when handling sensitive or confidential information
• Attention to detail

This is a paid position: $17.50/hr
