Organizational Overview
State Democracy Defenders Action (SDDA) is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization dedicated to defeating election sabotage and denial, fighting autocracy, and building a resilient democracy. SDDA also provides general administration for a group of related independent entities including State Democracy Defenders Fund (c3),Democracy Defenders PAC, and Democracy Defenders Projects – the home for the new media entity, The Contrarian. We were founded to counter the authoritarian threat to our democracy. State Democracy Defenders Action was founded in 2023 by Ambassador Norm Eisen (ret.), alongside other leading figures in democracy defense, elections, and law. SDDA launched the Contrarian which is being led by Eisen and new Editor-in Chief, Jen Rubin.
Position Summary
State Democracy Defenders Action (SDDA) is looking for rising juniors, seniors and recent college graduates with an interest in political and strategic comms, pro-democracy initiatives, and the fight against autocracy. Our internship provides students a unique opportunity to play a key role in preserving democracy by supporting our communications program. Communications Interns will report to the Communications Director and work closely with the team to track headlines related to the org’s legal efforts, draft social media for SDDA and SDDF’s X and Bluesky accounts, and field press inquiries.
Interns are expected to adapt to breaking news, connect with other members of the comms team daily, and proactively adapt to a rapidly changing comms landscape.

This is a paid position: $17.50/hr
