Job Description

Teacher Mentor Volunteer
EDIFY Program
Volunteer Position
100% Virtual, Flexible Schedule

Position Summary:

Join us in empowering foster youth through a new program at KVC West Virginia called EDIFY!

EDIFY is an early intervention initiative serving foster youth in grades three through seven, providing mentorship, tutoring, and preparation for success in high school and beyond. The program is youth-led by college students who were once foster youth, creating a supportive and relatable environment. Our Success Coaches are newer to teaching, and we're seeking experienced retired educators to guide them in instructional methods and teaching practices. As a Teacher Mentor Volunteer, you'll play a vital role in mentoring these Success Coaches by helping them develop effective teaching strategies that can be adapted to the needs of foster youth.

In this role, you will provide mentorship to Success Coaches, contributing to the program's overall mission of building resilience and confidence in foster youth. You will meet with your assigned Success Coaches weekly to review lesson planning, discuss learning goals, and observe tutoring sessions.

This 100% virtual role allows mentors to be located anywhere, making it accessible to passionate educators nationwide.

Schedule:

Approximately 8-10 hours per week (flexible scheduling based on volunteer availability). EDIFY tutoring hours are between 4-8 p.m., Monday through Friday. Some of the mentorship can be done during the day due to the flexibility of our Success Coaches college class schedule.

Experience:

  • Retired educator, all grade levels (special education experience is a plus but not required).
  • Background in mentoring, tutoring, or individualized educational planning.
  • Skilled in collaborative and supportive guidance.
  • Passionate about supporting the growth of students in foster care.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in curriculum planning or educational goal setting.
  • Familiarity with learning challenges and the ability to adapt teaching methods accordingly.
  • Ability to inspire and develop Success Coaches with personal teaching insights and effective instructional strategies.

Responsibilities:

  • Mentor Success Coaches, focusing on teaching them effective instructional methods and how to adapt to various learning styles.
  • Observe tutoring sessions, provide constructive feedback, and complete evaluation forms to support Success Coaches' growth.
  • Assist in establishing learning goals and educational plans for EDIFY's tutoring approach.
  • Help design specific learning and life enrichment activities to enhance the tutoring experience.

Additional Information:

This is a non-paid, 100% virtual volunteer position. Mentors will have access to all programs we use in tutoring, including the Microsoft product suite, learning apps like Newsela and IXL, and program supplies. Your mentorship will empower Success Coaches with the skills and confidence needed to support foster youth effectively. We hope you join us in this impactful opportunity to inspire and guide the next generation.
